A thriving recitation ministry generates excitement about sharing passages of Scripture and encourages Biblical understanding. We can help your recitation ministry get started by providing training and resources as well as a network of leaders who have experienced the value of Scripture recitation.
A recitation of Scripture takes time to prepare—at least a month, so the selection of a passage and assignment to a reciter must begin at least a full month before the recitation date. This can be a challenge, but it is possible without changing anything about how you normally operate, by matching the passage source to your regular process flow.
Stock passages of Scripture are those that can be recited independent of the teaching. Most benedictions and calls to worship fit this category, as do several proverbs. The recitation coordinator selects a passage and matches it to someone and chooses a date. All of this can be done independently and is then confirmed with the teaching team.
Another source involves the worship team. Frequently, passages are quoted before and during worship music. This is a good opportunity for the recitation coordinator to work with the worship team to coordinate which passages can be recited and how they will interact with the music.
A third source is the reciter themselves. Individuals may request to recite passages that have some personal significance. Perhaps it was spoken at their baptism or wedding or is a family favorite. Here, too, the recitation coordinator takes the lead, being sure to confirm with the teaching team about the contents and date.
It is only at the fourth level that the teaching team would be actively involved in passage selection. It is at their pleasure to choose whether a passage should be recited. If a pastor or other teacher typically plans at least a month in advance, then this can be a natural extension of that planning. If planning is not typically done this far in advance, then a recitation ministry can thrive anyway, and there is no need for the pastor to struggle to fit into an uncomfortable mold.
And the nudge is almost always dependent on the recitation coordinator. This person leads the local recitation ministry and is the impetus for new projects, the arm recruiting new reciters, the focal point for questions, and the liaison with the teaching team. Finding someone who resonates with, and is enlivened by, Scripture recitation is critical to the ministry’s success.
The best recitation coordinators have the following qualities:
The best part about finding recitation coordinators is that it is exactly the qualities they have that results in them self-selecting to be the recitation coordinator. It’s surprisingly common!
