Commonly asked questions

Are host families paid?

No, host families are not paid.

Host family requirements include providing the following:

  1. The opportunity to participate in your family’s daily lives and events
  2. The same care, support, and comfort you would another member of your family
  3. A bed, not convertible or inflatable in nature.
  4. One quality meal each day (esp. dinner). Inclusion of meals eaten as a family in restaurants or with friends are up to the discretion of the family and decision of the guest.

By Heart interns arrive with their own spending money for social and personal expenses. This includes clothes, snacks, souvenirs, travel expenses, cell phone charges, entertainment, and health expenses. As a host family, you do not need to provide spending money or a stipend.

No, By Heart interns will come with secondary medical insurance so that, in an emergency, they can be treated as soon as possible.

Our interns have responded to a request to assist our ministry in one of four areas: curriculum development, marketing, administration, or videography. They have a confession of Christian faith and a desire to serve as unpaid interns with our ministry. Our interns have demonstrated initiative, gathering support from family and/or friends and chosen to make a positive impact on the world.

No. Although living in Germany is a wonderful opportunity to learn the language, German language skills are not a requirement for working with By Heart. Since Frankfurt is such an international city, it is possible to enjoy this beautiful area with only a rudimentary knowledge of German.

Our working language is English and the international churches all speak English.

Our standard internship is 3 months (12 weeks). Depending on circumstances, there may be shorter internships of 1- or 2-months. We think the best experience for everyone is the 3-month internship.

It is best to plan for even the most unlikely events, so here we go:

  1. If the guest commits a crime in Germany, they will be immediately terminated from the program. From the moment that they are made aware of the crime, the host family would not need to allow the guest back in their house. By Heart will cover the expense of lodging at the Frankfurt Youth Hostel until flight arrangements can be finalized.
  2. If the guest contracts a serious illness such that they need specialized care, they will be asked to return to their homeland as soon as they are able to travel.
  3. If the guest is injured and the injury renders them incapable of doing their work, then the host family will determine how long they will continue hosting. If terminating the host relationship early, then we ask for a one-week grace period so that travel arrangements can be made.
  4. Violation of house rules can result in termination. This is solely at the discretion of the host family. We ask for a one-week grace period to try to find another host family. The grounds for needing to change host families will be revealed to any potential host families. After the one-week grace period, the guest will need to find other accommodations (e.g., the Frankfurt Youth Hostel) until their travel home can be finalized.

Yes, families can host up to two By Heart interns at a time. Some host families decide hosting two is better than one and find the hosting experience even more rewarding. Everyone involved must approve of this arrangement.

Yes! The most important thing is that there is a warm, welcoming environment. Whether or not you have children in your home, you are eligible to apply to be a By Heart Host Family. We prefer married couples but a single person with no children will still be considered.

No, you have no obligation to be a taxi driver for your By Heart intern. The interns are instructed to use the vast network of public transportation in Germany.

We recommend that they take advantage of the current “Deutschland-ticket” that, for €58 per month, allows free travel on all buses, trams (“S-Bahn” and “U-Bahn”), and regional trains throughout all of Germany.

Assessment

By Heart HOst Family

The host family assessment gives us a baseline for finding a good match.

Goals of the assessment:

  • The Assessment has two goals. The first is to get an indication of how well-suited you are to have a great experience hosting a By Heart intern.

  • The second purpose for this assessment is to gather some information that will help match the right person to your circumstances.

What you will need to do:

  • The assessment is provided online. It consists of 14 questions and takes 15-20 minutes to complete

Introduction Meeting

By Heart HOst Family

An online meeting to let the host family meet the candidate intern and get a feel for if it is a good fit

Goals of the introduction meeting:

  • To introduce both parties and confirm suitability and explore compatibility.

What you will need to do:

  • Attend a 30-minute Zoom call in which you will meet your potential guest. A host will pose a few questions, but the course of the conversation will depend on what you want to know and to express any concerns.

  • This is an opportunity for both sides to honestly appraise if this will be the best fit. Either side may still say that they would prefer a different match.

Mutual Agreement

By Heart HOst Family

A formal document signed by both parties that identifies specific conditions to the host family relationship.

Goals of the agreement:

  • To put into writing important points for a healthy hosting relationship.

What you will need to do:

  • Starting with a standard template, add any specific points that are important to you for a frictionless relationship during the hosting time. You may also want to modify points that are in the standard template.

This is not to be legalistic but is meant to stipulate boundaries that both sides agree to, The resulting agreement will be signed by both parties.

Mutual growth

By Heart HOst Family

Employing best practices to ensure a healthy host relationship.

Goals:

  • To get the most out of the hosting relationship by keeping in mind some best practices.

What you will need to do:

  • Encourage open communication
  • Benefit from daily conversations
  • Show them how to handle household gadgets, follow family rules, and perform daily routines.
  • Guide your guest in your culture, language nuances, and community norms
  • Raise red flags if you see something amiss.
  • Share from your personal life—but only what you want.
