By Heart is a partner of the International Baptist Convention, Verses Bible memory app, and the Network of Biblical Storytellers International.

The By Heart Internship program has both a skills component and a service component. By Heart benefits from the service of interns and, in turn, expects to invest in the intern’s personal skills development. Participants in the 3-month long program are evaluated to match their capabilities and desired growth areas so as to meet the needs of the individual as well as of the organization.
Teaching is at the core of our mission, and developing instructional units that explain how to prepare for and deliver a recitation of Scripture is a primary focus.
With three social media channels (YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook) plus Email marketing, By Heart extends its reach marketing target segments worldwide.
From strategic customer relationship management (CRM) software to accounting, By Heart is a business and we take regulatory compliance and business best practices seriously.
Videos convey messages beyond the words, allowing us to present personal testimonies of changed lives, challenges we’ve faced and the word that of truth that we love to speak
With a United States passport, you can stay a maximum of 90 days in Germany before you must leave and return to the United States. Our internship is for 12 weeks (84 days). Please note that your passport expiration date needs to be three months after your planned departure date.
Your standard work week will be full-time Monday through Thursday. Some weeks, you may request, and we grant, a half-day on one of those days (esp. Thursday or Monday). This schedule has enough flexibility to give you time for some sightseeing around Germany.
On Sundays, one of our regular activities is to visit international churches in the area. You will be invited to accompany but are under no obligation to attend a particular church. You may even enjoy the opportunity to visit a German-speaking church.
We offer four internship groups: Marketing, Curriculum development, Administration, and Videography. More detailed descriptions for each of these is provided in the sections above on this webpage.
Even with these groupings, each person is unique, and we want to not only utilize your current capabilities but also invest in your personal development. We will collaborate with you to develop a plan before you start.
You will stay with a host family. There are many families in the Frankfurt area who would love to share their home with you for three months. We will help you find the right one, whether it’s with a quiet older couple or a bustling family or something in-between. Once we find a match, we will host an introductory 30-minute Zoom call to confirm that it is a good match.
You will be responsible for raising funds to cover your travel expenses, including your roundtrip airfare. Raising support for an overseas mission means much more than just getting cash. Gathering supporters who rally behind your efforts, supporting you with prayer, funding, and ongoing interaction can make this a wonderfully enriching experience.
While in Germany, you can take advantage of the “Deutschland Ticket” which, for €58, allows you to travel all regional trains, trams, and buses throughout all of Germany. It is an amazing benefit to being here.
No, you don’t! Frankfurt is a very international city; people from all over the world gather here. English is the common language, and it is taught in German schools. Except in the older age groups, Germans know English—some know it better than natives so they may even correct you! NOTE: correcting someone is seen as a kindness here since it helps you avoid such a mistake in the future.
Our working language is English and the international churches all speak English.
Yes, to some extent. A fully enabled bank account in Germany is a joy to behold, but you are unlikely to get one of those. The account that you can get is like an escrow account from which you can withdraw a lump sum once a month.
Most credit cards and debit cards are accepted in Germany. There can be significant transaction fees if you withdraw from an ATM (Automat) that is not of your bank. Currency conversion fees will apply.
Yes. And vegans as well. Although Germans love their sausages, they are also very health conscious, so the grocery stores have many fresh fruits and vegetables, and if you are a bread lover, then Germany is a little heaven.
You should get health insurance coverage before coming to Germany. The German health system is lovely, with neighborhood doctors as well as advanced research hospitals, but you need to have some form of health insurance.
Yes. When you get here, you can pick up a prepaid SIM card to plug into your phone. These are available at grocery stores and telecom offices and provide you with a German telephone number that works throughout the European union. You can decide how much mobile data you will need.
No, you won’t be paid. Although we will value your contributions, this is an unpaid internship.
Public transportation, meaning buses, trains, and trams, is a highly developed system in Germany. Frankfurt has an extensive network of tram lines (“S-Bahn” and “U-Bahn”) both within the city and between cities and the trams run frequently. Regional trains and high-speed rail (Inter-City Express or “ICE”) span the larger distances.
We would recommend that you take advantage of the current “Deutschland-ticket” that, for €58 per month, allows free travel on all buses, trams (“S-Bahn” and “U-Bahn”), and regional trains throughout all of Germany. It is an incredible deal if you frequently use public transit. The high-speed ICE trains, however, are excluded from this offer.
Your funding should cover travel expenses to and from Germany. For travel within Germany, we recommend that you take advantage of the current “Deutschland-ticket” that, for €58 per month, allows free travel on all buses, trams, and regional trains throughout all of Germany. If traveling outside of the Frankfurt area you will need to pay for your lodging.
As for food, we ask that host families provide you with an evening meal. At their discretion, they may provide more. Depending on your host family, you may need money for breakfast and lunch. You should also set aside funds for personal items and gifts to bring back home.
It’s up to you. Much of our work is online, either using online applications or communicating with others. If you are comfortable with your own computer, then bring it with you. If you’d prefer, By Heart has a work computer that you can use.
The Handbook Germany has advice for people with disabilities at https://handbookgermany.de/en/disability. Our personal experience is that although there is an intent to provide for people with physical disabilities (here, I mean specifically mobility challenges) with elevators at tram stations and ramps at office buildings, there are frequent gaps. Elevators at tram stations that don’t work and office buildings with only stair access are common. However, in contrast to these challenges, the buses lower to allow easy access for wheelchairs and the trains and trams make special accommodations to allow for wheelchair access. In summary, it is an odd mix that we see. Our opinion is that mobility challenges pose a risk, and the specific scenario would need to be researched before one could have any certainty.
By Heart is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization but we are not affiliated with any schools. If you would like to receive school credit, we will be glad to prepare a letter for your school describing the work you have done for our organization. It would then be up to your school about whether they would assign credit for your effort.
If this is an important consideration, then you should discuss the internship with your school beforehand to determine if they will give credit. If you need any information about the internship for that meeting, then please contact By Heart and we will provide the needed information.
Frankfurt has a low crime rate. Crimes such as drug dealing, petty theft, and vandalism are far more common than any more serious crimes.
You heard correctly. Forms to fill out and lines in which to wait are a fact of life here. Think of it as wonderfully orderly. You will need to register in the city where you will be staying within two weeks of arriving.
Frankfurt am Main is a city located on an important river in Germany, the Main (pronounced “mine”). It is home to the European Central Bank and is known as the financial capital of Europe. The pictures here look amazing and, as it turns out, it actually looks like that! As if this wasn’t enough, Frankfurt is surrounded by fields, hills, and forests.
